Standard Brick Size

What Is Standard Brick Size?

Bricks are the most commonly used and essential building material for construction. The standard brick size is used to make a masonry wall to divide the room in the building. Which is used due to its durable and strong nature. Due to its low cost and durability, it has been used continuously even in modern times.

Traditionally bricks for building construction were initially made of clay. Bricks have a long history from the past to the present. Which has an old history up to about 5000 bc. The use of brick as an ancient technique is found in Roman, Egyptian and Indian cultures.

The size and dimensions of the bricks may vary according to the weather in different countries. But depending on their application bricks can be made in different sizes and shapes.

Standard bricks have a specific size and shape of bricks and specifications like strong, durable etc.

If the bricks are large, such bricks cannot be burned properly. It also becomes too heavy to carry.

Similarly, mortar is used more if the bricks are smaller. Due to this standard size has been fixed for different brickwork.

Most bricks are made in masonry work at a nominal size of 4-inches. Which can be accomplished to suit the doors, windows and wooden parts of the house.

What Is Frog?

The frog is made on the top surface of the bricks. Which provides a strong bond between the upper layers of bricks.

The frog is kept 10-20 mm deep in the brick. The frog in the brick strengthens the bond of the brick with the mortar.

Importance of Brick

The following are some important points for using brick in building construction.

Fire protection: Bricks are not easily affected by the fire. Some bricks made of fireproof bricks have fire resistance up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wind protection: A house made of bricks is stronger to withstand external factors like storms compared to materials like fibre and gypsum. According to a study, a brick building has the capacity to withstand wind speeds of up to 80 miles per hour.

Humidity control: Brick is an ideal material as waterproofing for toilets and bathrooms sunk in the building. Hence it proves to be the best in humidity control in the house.

Minimal waste: Bricks are materials made using natural clay. So that a piece of brick can be reused. Or a piece of brick can be used as a base under the flooring in a building.

Brick Orientation

The standard size of Brick is a three-dimensional solid element. It has length, width and height. Its thickness is specially mentioned.

Elevation can be created by fixing bricks according to the standard size of brick in six different ways.

When the brick is placed on a stretcher with a standard size of brick the height and length of the brick remain open. Which is commonly called face dimension.

Brick Standard Dimension and Size

It is necessary to know about the standard size of brick for building construction. It is important to know about the various dimensions of the standard size of brick as per the specification required during design and construction.

Different Dimensions of Bricks

  • Nominal dimensions
  • Specified dimensions.
  • Actual dimensions.

1. Nominal Dimensions

Nominal dimensions size bricks are used in modular construction.

In that construction, calculations are made with the Nominal size of a brick and joint width of mortar.

This type of brick is 4 “thick and 8” wide.

Nominal dimensions of bricks can be used in doors, windows and wood components in a building.

2. Actual Dimensions

The actual dimensions of the brick are called the bricks coming out of the production plant.

The actual dimensions are produced according to the mould for the brick.

Variation of tolerance of brick varies depending on the shape and size of the bricks.

Tolerance is provided by standard specifications such as ASTM. ASTM C216 is used as the standard specification for facing bricks. Similarly, the specifications of C652 applies to hollow bricks.

3. Specified Dimensions

In masonry work in specified dimensions, the dimensions of the brick are determined without considering the mortar.

Bricks with specified dimensions are used as elevation in buildings.

Bricks with specified dimensions are used in construction as exterior elevation.

Standard Size of Brick In India

The standard Size of Brick is known as modular brick.

The standard size of Brick for the building is 19 × 9 × 9 cm and 19 × 9 × 4 cm.

The standard size of a brick with 19 × 9 × 9 cm is made 20 × 10 × 10 cm with mortar. Which shows the size of the brick with the mortar.

The standard brick dimensions are 7.48 X 3.54 x 3.54 (length x width x thickness) in inches.

Brick size 9 ″ × 4 ”× 3” is used in most parts of the country. This type of brick is known as field bricks. This type of brick does not weight more than 3.0 kg.

The frog is to form a key between two bricks in masonry work. And to reinforce the wall with mortar.

Different Types of Bricks and Their Standard Size In India

The types of standard bricks and their standard size India are given as under,

  • Modular bricks
  • Non-modular bricks
  • English size bricks
  • Conventional bricks

1. Modular Bricks

This type of standard brick is called the size of the brick with cement mortar joints.

The standard size for a brick in India is 190 mm × 90 mm × 90 mm. Which is usually the standard modular size of a building brick (length × width height).

This type of brick is machine made.

2. Non-Modular Bricks

Some other brick sizes are 230mm × 110mm × 70mm and 230mm × 110mm × 30mm non-modular bricks. Which is used in ordinary houses.

3. English Size Bricks

In India, English sized bricks in various brick sizes are used in construction. The size of this brick is 230mm × 115mm × 75mm.

4. Conventional Bricks

230mm × 110mm × 110mm size bricks are used in India as Conventional bricks.

The Standard Size Of Burnt Clay Bricks

Burnt clay bricks in kilns are obtained with proper strength. Standard size and specification of burnt clay bricks are given as per IS code.

2. Heavy Clay Perforated Bricks (IS 2222)

This type of standard brick has a thickness, high compressive strength and low water absorption. In addition, this type of brick has cylindrical holes.

This type of brick is easy and economical to burn.

This type of brick is lighter in weight than other types of brick.

This type of standard brick can be used in construction as the direction of vertical or horizontal holes.

This type of brick can be used specifically for walls and partition walls.

This type of brick is used for masonry work with large dimensions parallel to the long side of the brick.

Standard size bricks of this type of brick are available in two sizes. (i) 190 × 90 × 90 mm. (ii) 290 × 90 × 90 mm.

Tolerances:

Dimensions  (cm) Tolerances (mm)
290 +  10
190 +  7
9 +  4

3. Burnt Clay Paving Bricks (IS 3583)

This type of standard size brick has a higher iron ratio than ordinary clay bricks.

Vitrification of bricks is seen due to the high iron content in this type of brick. This type of brick gives a natural shine. So that this type of brick acts as more resistant to abrasion.

Paving bricks can be produced from impure fire clay, surface clay, etc. For making these types of bricks, a shell is the best raw material. These materials are kept burning in the kiln for seven consecutive days.

The standard size of burn clay paving bricks is as follows: 195 × 95 x 90 mm, (ii) 195 × 95 × 40 mm.
